Return of the Clones

There is a big difference between a clone and a mutation. A clone is an exact copy of a grape species, while a mutation produces a different variety altogether. Sangiovese Grosso is a clone of the Sangiovese grape, and a Chianti made from either one will have similar characteristics. Pinot Blanc is a mutation of Pinot Noir, producing a white wine and a red wine respectively.
