Chianti, Italy’s famous Sangiovese-based Tuscan wine, can be labeled in numerous ways, and each type of label gives the wine drinker clues as to minimum time spent in oak, origin of the grapes, where the wine is made, alcohol, grape
yield, and overall quality. There’s Chianti DOC, Chianti Classico DOCG, Chianti Superiore DOCG, Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG, Chianti + name of hills, colli, that the grapes come from (such as Chianti Colli Senesi DOCG) and—most recently and most contentiously—Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG.
